What is the difference between a crown & a bridge?
Crowns and bridges are dental restorations used to repair or replace damaged or missing teeth. A crown, often referred to as a “cap,” is used to cover and protect a tooth that’s been weakened by decay, fracture, or a large filling. It restores the tooth’s strength, shape, and appearance, allowing you to chew comfortably and smile confidently. Crowns are typically made from strong, natural-looking materials like porcelain or ceramic and are custom-designed to blend seamlessly with your other teeth.
A bridge, on the other hand, is used to replace one or more missing teeth. It consists of one or more artificial teeth (called pontics) that are anchored in place by crowns on the neighbouring natural teeth or dental implants. Bridges help restore your bite, maintain the shape of your face, and prevent the remaining teeth from shifting out of position.
Why are bridges & crowns important?
Crowns and bridges do more than just improve the appearance of your smile—they also play a key role in your overall oral health. Crowns protect vulnerable teeth from further damage and can extend the life of a tooth that might otherwise need to be extracted. Bridges fill the gaps left by missing teeth, which is important for keeping your bite balanced and avoiding complications like jaw pain or uneven wear on other teeth.
At Panmure Dentists, we take a personalised approach to every restoration, ensuring your crown or bridge fits comfortably, functions properly, and looks great. If you’ve got a damaged tooth or missing teeth, we’re here to help you regain a healthy, complete smile.

FAQs
A crown is a custom-made cap that covers and protects a damaged or weakened tooth. A bridge is used to replace one or more missing teeth by anchoring artificial teeth to the natural teeth or crowns on either side of the gap.
You may need a crown to restore a tooth that’s cracked, decayed, worn down, or after a root canal. A bridge is often recommended if you’re missing teeth and want to restore your smile, chewing ability, and proper bite alignment.
With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups, crowns and bridges can last 10 to 15 years or more. Their longevity depends on the material used and how well you care for your oral health.
Not at all. At Panmure Dentists, we use modern materials like porcelain or ceramic that match the colour of your natural teeth—making your crown or bridge blend seamlessly into your smile.
The procedure is not painful. We use local anaesthetic to keep you comfortable throughout the treatment. Most patients find it no more uncomfortable than getting a regular filling.
Treat your crown or bridge like a natural tooth: brush twice daily, floss (especially around the base of the bridge), and avoid biting on hard objects. Regular dental visits are important to monitor the health of the supporting teeth and gums.
What to Expect
01.
We start with a thorough examination, including X-rays if needed, to assess the condition of your teeth and determine whether a crown or bridge is the right option for you. We’ll talk you through your options and create a personalised treatment plan.
02.
For crowns, we gently shape the affected tooth to make room for the crown. For bridges, we prepare the supporting teeth on either side of the gap. Then, we take precise impressions to ensure your crown or bridge fits comfortably and blends naturally with your other teeth.
03.
While your custom crown or bridge is being crafted in the lab, we’ll fit a temporary one to protect your prepared teeth and maintain your smile’s appearance and function.
04.
Once your permanent crown or bridge is ready, we’ll carefully fit, adjust, and cement it into place. We’ll make sure the bite feels right and that it looks completely natural—restoring strength, function, and confidence to your smile.
