Our experienced team ensures a smooth, stress-free process with your comfort as the top priority—so you can get back to feeling your best.

Why do wisdom teeth need to be removed?

Wisdom teeth are the last set of molars to come through—usually in your late teens or early twenties—but most mouths don’t have enough space to fit them properly. When there isn’t enough room, wisdom teeth can grow at odd angles, get stuck (impacted), or only partially break through the gums, increasing the risk of pain, infection, decay, and crowding. In many cases, removing them early prevents more serious dental issues down the track. At Panmure Dentists, we assess the position of your wisdom teeth with advanced imaging and recommend removal only when it’s in your best long-term interest.

What can happen if left untreated?

  • Infection – When an impacted wisdom tooth starts to push through the gums, an infection can start around the top of the tooth. Infection and inflammation (swollen red gums) can cause pain, swelling and jaw stiffness.
  • Crowding – A wisdom tooth may push nearby teeth out of their correct position and may help to cause crowding of front teeth.
  • Cysts – Sacs of fluid called cysts can form around the tooth and may displace the tooth. The cysts can destroy bone and damage other teeth and gums.
  • Damage to nearby molars – An impacted wisdom tooth may keep pushing against molars next to it. This often leads to serious damage to both teeth.

FAQs

Wisdom teeth often don’t have enough space to grow properly, which can lead to pain, infection, crowding, or damage to nearby teeth. Removal helps prevent these complications.

The procedure itself is painless, as we use local anaesthetic or sedation to keep you comfortable. Some soreness and swelling afterward is normal and can be managed with rest and pain relief.

Most people recover within a few days to a week. You’ll need to take it easy for the first 24–48 hours, stick to soft foods, and follow our aftercare instructions closely.

Depending on how many you’re getting out and the complexity of location, the surgery can take anywhere between 30 minutes to 90 minutes.

Common signs include pain at the back of the mouth, swollen or bleeding gums, jaw stiffness, or repeated infections. An X-ray can confirm whether removal is necessary.

If your wisdom teeth are healthy, fully erupted, and not affecting other teeth, they may not need to be removed. We’ll monitor them with regular check-ups to make sure they don’t cause issues later.

Stick to soft, cool foods like yoghurt, smoothies, mashed potatoes, and soups for the first few days. Avoid anything hard, hot, spicy, or crunchy while your mouth heals.
